Are you from Africa?

Monday, August 16 2010 is a historical day for me. This is the day I started classes at Hinds CC, which means this is my first day of class in the US.

Now I know what it looks like to be in an a school outside the DR Congo. The day has been very good. I have had the chance to experience the two circumstances I will have to face with my teachers: some will speak at a good speed
for me, some others will speak too fast.

I started my day with Algebra. That was a very good class. The course looks very easy to me and the teacher's English is so easy to understand. Mr D R will probably be one of my preferred teachers for I can understand what he says and I like what he teaches.

Anyways, I will not make any judgement about my teachers. I need to like them all. It is good for my grades and performance. Isn't it? That takes me to the class where I first not felt very comfortable, but then started to feel confident as I got to understand what she was saying. She is one of the teachers that will be speaking very fast. So, it will take a while before I get used to
Mrs R's speed but I believe it is gonna be fine.

Something funny in the Algebra class today: the teacher wanted someone to read a Greek alphabet symbol. I tried and missed it. But then he gave us some more to try with. We have been able to read alpha, theta, etc. and then came pi. I read /pee/. The teacher immediately turned back and asked: "Are you from Africa?" - Yes, sir. I answered. - I am from Kenya, he added. - I know, I replied. The teacher laughed and commented about the fact that the symbol is read /pie/ in English and that is why he could tell I am not from the area. Welcome in America!!

I really like my new life and the people around me!

After my two classes, I waited in a line for an hour to enter the bookstore for some "shopping". After this errand, I was happy to meet G for the ride back home.
